The Most Common Contaminants
There’re several dozens thousands of contaminants in water. You even can’t name all the viruses and bacteria that can affect your health through water.

Among most common:

Chlorine
Chlorine is used in water purification systems to kill viruses and bacteria. But that’s only one side of the coin. Chlorine is considered to be carcinogen and derivatives it forms can cause cancer. Water shortage becomes wide-spread and water is stored in high basins, where microorganisms multiply with a great speed. That’s why authorities use chlorine for disinfection in large amounts.
Besides causing cancer chlorine affects the bladder. It also damages body protein. That’s why skin and hair exposed to chlorine suffer form dryness and eyes often burn. People who suffer from asthma, allergies, sinus problems can get in a very poor health condition.
Then chlorine can react with other substances and form various derivatives. For example, chlorine formation called trihalomethane is much more dangerous than chlorine itself.

Another harmful formation is chlorine dioxide. Infants and children suffer greatly drinking water rich in chlorine dioxide. Their nervous system is damaged. It’s also far from being unsafe for pregnant women. Some people get ill with anemia.

Microbes
Coliform bacteria are not dangerous in nature. But when the water purification system is not organized in a proper way these bacteria can get into drinking water. The presence of coliform bacteria means that the water is contaminated with animal or human wastes. These microbes can cause diarrhea, nausea, headaches and cramps.

Micro-organisms are often present in water. Among them are germs, amoeba, parasites and viruses. Chlorine added to the water purification systems helps to kill micro-organisms. But it’s not always effective. Parasitic infections can spread through water with micro-organisms.

Lead
Although in most countries lead is forbidden to use in plumbing devices it’s still present in older constructions and buildings. It’s extremely dangerous for children and pregnant women.

Copper
Acidic water supplies can eat away both copper and lead during the night. And that’s why in the morning (or after a long period of not-using the tap) the water is full of copper and lead. So don’t mind opening a tap in the morning and waiting for a while till these substances flow away.

Acid Water
In tin or fiberglass container water (especially rainwater) becomes acid. The same effect is caused by using reverse osmosis water filters. If you drink acid water the amount of acid in the body rises.
